Colin Comiskey, 34, grabbed Ellen Van De Vusse then threw the bird, splattering her dressing gown with fat and morsels of fowl.
Social media designer Ms Vusse called the police and locked herself in the bathroom, Westminster magistrates heard on Thursday.
Jonathan Bryan, prosecuting, said the couple had ended their three-year relationship two months before the row and fell out over living arrangements.
Irishman Comiskey got home to the rented flat in West Kensington, West London, on January 12 and woke his ex to offer her food.
Mr Bryan said: “The defendant arrived at 9.30pm. He was very drunk.
"He approached the complainant who was asleep.
“He asked her in a pleasant way to get up. She said she did not want to.
"His mood then changed.
"He said: ‘Get up, you aren’t sleeping now.’
“He said he had brought her dinner. She said she was not hungry.
"His response was to push her in the chest.
"It did not hurt her, and she tried to walk away.
“He picked up a chicken and it hit her on the dressing gown, the kitchen and TV. He was very angry, clenching his fists.”
When Ms Vusse rang 999, Comiskey said: “If you’re calling police, you’re going to regret it.’” He admitted assault and was given bail on condition he does not contact.
He will be sentenced on July 12. Assault by beating carries a maximum six-month jail term.
