Meghan ‘left for Hollywood’ after wanting to be ‘royal number one’ – expert

Meghan Markle hoped to be “royal number one” when she married Prince Harry, but left for Hollywood after realising this wouldn’t be the case, a royal biographer has claimed.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex began dating in July 2016 after being introduced on a blind date and the couple quickly cemented their relationship by marrying in a lavish Windsor ceremony in May 2018.

However, the pair's relationship with Royal Family members soon deteriorated, and the couple controversially stepped back from royal duties, instead establishing themselves in the celebrity neighbourhood of Montecito.

The Sussexes’ acrimonious exit has been heavily profiled by royal biographer Tom Bower in his new book and speaking to GB News, he claims one of the key reasons for Harry and Meghan’s split.

“We know the background and the motivation of a woman who clearly married into the Royal Family because she loved Harry, but also because she liked the status,” he said.

“And very quickly she discovered that she wasn’t going to get the status of number one, which is what she wanted.

“There is only one number one in the Royal Family, and the rest of the family is there to support the Queen.

“Meghan didn’t understand why she wasn’t in the spotlight and very quickly decided she would be better off in Hollywood", Bower claims.

During her interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan opened up about struggling with her mental health during her time within the Royal Family.

And, the royal biographer claims that this might partly have been down to the former actress not being able to fit into the hierarchical structure of the royal institution.

“Meghan is a person who controls the narrative, that has been part of the problem,” he claimed.

“When she came to London to become part of the Royal Family, she couldn’t understand why she wasn’t important and wasn’t in control of everything.

“And that’s why she has fractious relationships with so many people.”

The Daily Star has contacted representatives of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for comment.
