Meghan Markle told staff she ‘couldn’t believe she wasn’t paid for royal tours’

Meghan Markle was overheard saying that she 'couldn't believe' she wasn't getting paid to do royal tours, according to a new book.

In October 2018, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived in Australia for their first royal tour as a married couple.

The pair also visited Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand and were thought to have gone down a treat with the locals at the time.

However, according to royal author Valentine Low, "behind the scenes it was a different story" and Meghan "failed to understand the point" of what they were doing.

Low make the claims in his upcoming book Courtiers: the Hidden Power Behind the Crown, set to be released on October 6 and serialised in The Times.

The author notes how little acts of kindness such as bringing banana bread to the home of a farming family or visiting a school programme for young Aboriginals meant Meghan was "fêted as an inspirational role model".

However, he says that several members of staff heard Meghan saying "I can’t believe I’m not getting paid for this" on at least one occasion.

There were also allegations that staff were "treaty harshly".

One source said that the former communications secretary to the couple – Jason Knauf – described the tour as "very challenging" and "made worse by the behaviour of the duchess".

Samantha Cohen, the Queen’s former assistant private secretary who stepped in to help the couple as their interim private secretary, was said to have had a particularly torrid time, according a source.

“Sam had been screamed at before the flight and during,” they said.

That day she apparently warned staff to stay away from the Sussexes, and that evening colleagues tried to "arrange matters so that she did not have to see Harry and Meghan" more than she had to, according to Low.
