The First Lady of the United States and wife of President Donald Trump was tasked with overhauling the Rose Garden in July. The renovation included a new border made of limestone as well as pathways, plants, trees and technology to make it a more suitable location for television broadcasts.

However, just three weeks after Mrs Trump’s new design was revealed, repair work is once again under way.

Sources close to the matter told CNN there had been “minor complications” with the updated design and that there were “issues with water drainage.”

As a result, the garden will have to be re-turfed in order to help it better cope with rainfall.

Social media users took to Twitter to comment on the news, with several ironically referring to Mr Trump’s oft-repeated pre-election phrase: “Drain the swamp.”

One user said: “Everything the Trumps touch turns to s**t. Drainage Issues With Melania’s Rose Garden Are a Metaphor for the Trump Presidency.”

Another user said: “Maybe that’s what Trump meant when he said the swamp in DC needed to be drained.”

A third commented: “Trump not only didn’t ‘drain the swamp’, he turned the Rose Garden into one.”

Mr Trump had previously used the phrase as a metaphor for how he would solve problems within the US federal government.

When the redesign was first shared, one social media user said: “My family is one of those 30 million who struggle to have enough food; we depend on food banks when possible. It hurts to see Trump just waste taxpayers money on things like this!”

The cost of recent re-turfing of the Rose Garden has also not been disclosed, though a spokesman for the White House said this would not involve any taxpayer money.

According to CNN, repairs will instead be funded by the Trump campaign, which is also funding repairs to the White House’s South Lawn.

The South Lawn was damaged by Republic Nation Convention events this year, when hundreds of guests were seated in the area.

Mrs Trump’s redesign of the Rose Garden has been seen by some critics as pared-back.

According to architecture and design magazine Dezeen, the new look has done away with cherry trees and colourful tulips which had been planted by former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in the 1960s.

The redesign was carried out with landscaping firms Perry Guillot and Oehme, van Sweden & Associates.

Announcing the completed redesign in August, the First Lady said on Twitter: “Excited to honour history and celebrate the future in our beautiful White House Rose Garden this evening.

“Thank you to all who helped renew this iconic and truly gorgeous space.”
