Liziane Gutierrez, 32, has been placed in a coma by doctors in Istanbul, Turkey, after suffering a severe reaction to anaesthesia while undergoing cosmetic surgery.
Her family claim the operation was unnecessary but the model, who lives in the United States, had been determined to have the operation done despite their objections.
She secretly flew to Turkey earlier this month, after surgeons in the US refused to operate and advised her against doing the procedure as there was no excess fat to extract.
Relatives confirmed to Quem magazine they only discovered on Thursday that Gutierrez was in a life-threatening condition.
"Liziane is in Turkey, but not even the family knew that she had travelled there for aesthetic purposes,” said a family member, who didn’t wish to be named.
“She had some kind of reaction to the anaesthesia and to spare her, doctors put her in an induced coma.
"She had already expressed the intention to do liposuction, but since there was almost no fat, no doctor wanted to perform this surgery," he added.
The relative revealed when doctors refused to operate in the US, Gutierrez booked the procedure in a hospital in the Turkish capital.
"Actually, she didn’t want anyone to know she was having plastic surgery and went to Turkey to do the surgical procedures after doctors in the United States said it was unnecessary and refused to do it,” the family member said.
In 2017, the model won a civil lawsuit against rapper Chris Brown after she claimed he attacked her in a Las Vegas hotel room.
She is said to have received around $70,000 in compensation after claiming member of Brown's crew assaulted her while confiscating her cell phone at a luxury party held by the R&B star.
At the time, TMZ reported the incident occurred after Brown caught her taking his photo at the bash at the Palms Hotel and Casino on December 31, 2015.
The Grammy award winning artist denied the allegations but reached an agreement after Gutierrez stepped up her claim by suing for defamation.
