Moment masked gunman shoots man at point blank range in ‘targeted attack’

This is the terrifying moment a masked gunman takes aim at his victim in a residential street.

The suspect – wearing a black ski mask, grey tracksuit bottoms and a distinctive blue top with a white motif down the arms – points a long barrelled firearm towards a hunched over figure.

The shooting – thought to be a targeted attack – left the male victim, 32, badly injured and, according to a witness, losing a lot of blood.

Police investigating the shooting have released the CCTV image as officers hunt the suspect.

The incident happened at around 4.40am on Friday on Arnold Street, Birkby, West Yorkshire.

Police said the victim was in a stable condition in hospital with serious leg injuries.

The incident is being treated as a targeted attack and West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquires Team is leading the investigation.

Det Insp Emma Winfield said: “We are continuing to appeal for witnesses to this incident or anyone who may have seen a man previously acting suspiciously in the area wearing similar clothing.

“We also believe the suspect left the scene in a small blue van and would ask for anyone who may have seen this vehicle to contact us.

“This is clearly a very serious incident and reassurance patrols will continue in the area while our investigation is progressing.”

Anyone who can assist with enquiries is asked to contact the Homicide and Major Enquiries Team on 101, quoting crime reference 13180276790, or use the Contact Us options on the West Yorkshire Police website.

Information can also be reported anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Yesterday witnesses told The Huddersfield Daily Examiner that a blue Citroen had been spotted moments before the shooting.

One witness said the victim had lost a lot of blood before he was taken to hospital.

A local taxi driver, Majid Ali, 44, said he had heard shots in the street at 4.43am.

Residents described hearing the victim screaming. Residents gave first aid to the victim as they waited for an ambulance to arrive.

Later armed police attended Wheathouse Road in Birkby as part of their investigations into the shooting.

Police said their presence on Wheathouse Road was in relation to the firearms discharge on Arnold Street.
