The London Fire Brigade Tweeted: "Around 1,300 people have been evacuated due to the 24-inch gas main that has ruptured on Seething Lane junction of Crutched Friars. Fenchurch Street station is not affected. Please avoid the area if possible."

Earlier the emergency services team tweeted that around 150 people had been evacuated from offices and commercial buildings.

They wrote just before 4pm today: "Firefighters are attending a ruptured gas main on Seething Lane at the junction of Crutched Fryers Lane in the City of London.

"Around 150 people have been evacuated from commercial premises and offices. Please avoid the area if possible."

It is not clear when people will be allowed back to the site of the incident and the surrounding area, but it is understood firefighters are still working at the scene to resolve the issue.

Meanwhile, dozens of guests who were staying at nearby hotels were evacuated from their rooms and were given instructions to wait in a local park near Tower Hill, MyLondon reported.

The displaced guests were given emergency blankets.

The Daily Star has contacted the London Fire Brigade for more information regarding the incident.
