Most popular Royal Family member among staff revealed – it’s not Harry or Wills

Meghan Markle might be the centre of attention in the Royal Family at the moment but behind closed doors at the palace there’s another favourite among staff.

Employees are said to love his "cheekiness" – but it’s not Harry or Wills , nor is it young George .

Matt Smith, who plays Prince Philip in Netflix drama The Crown – which chronicles the life of The Queen – has lifted the lid in a new interview.

And he’s revealed how much the 97-year-old Duke of Edinburgh is adored by staff – and is the secret favourite.

"In the royal house he’s the most popular of all of them," Smith told Variety .

"All the research I did found him to be brilliantly funny, very clever, very popular.

"If you’ve talked to any of the staff, Philip’s the one they all love really. I think more than a lot of them, he’s a bit more of a man of the people."

Smith , 35, also described how it is Philip’s "naughtiness and cheekiness" that makes him so well liked.

Meanwhile, Philip reportedly scoffed at the ‘ridiculous’ suggestion he watches The Crown, Smith added.

Philip is said to have made the remark during dinner with one of the actor’s pals and said: “Don’t be ridiculous”.

Netflix has confirmed the series will be back in 2019. Olivia Colman will take over from Claire Foy in the role as Queen Elizabeth, while Tobias Menzies will star as Philip.

Earlier this month Philip joined the Queen at a church service in Balmoral just months after he had a hip replacement.

He surprised his wife and other family members with the rare public appearance at Crathie Kirk church.
