Mum slit son’s throat and then knifed daughter after she tried to escape

A mum slit the throats of her own children before attemping to take her own life – but stopped "because it hurt".

Berenice Jaramillo-Hernandez, 26, killed Miranda Jaramillo, five, and Katherine Miranda Jaramillo, six, on December 11, 2020.

When police officers arrived at the scene in the city of Gainesville, Florida, the US, she had serious injuries to her neck, and both children were already dead.

Jaramillo-Hernandez had laid her son and daughter down side-by-side and covered them with face masks.

Police officers believe Miranda was killed while he was asleep, as his sister watched.

Katherine then tried to escape, suffering defence wounds to her hands and other areas, the Gainesville Times reports.

Blood had been left on the “furniture, walls, and mostly everything else”, Sheriff’s Office investigator Jerry Phillips told Hall County Superior Court.

The murder weapon was found on a dresser, along with multiple notes detailing Jaramillo-Hernandez’s plans to kill her kids.

Philipps added: “When we talked to her about what kept her from killing herself by cutting her own throat, she said, ‘Because it hurt.’”

Jaramillo-Hernandez pleaded guilty to malice murder, first-degree child cruelty, and aggravated assault.

She will serve two consecutive life sentences.

Northeastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney Lee Darragh said: “This was one of the saddest cases I’ve seen in decades of prosecution.

“The finality of her guilty plea guaranteeing that she’ll never again see the light of freedom is a good result.”

In May, a mum hanged her 14-year-old daughter before killing herself and leaving a chilling note for the distraught father.
