A single mum so poor she could not even afford a wheelchair was found dead beside her child after they plunged from a ninth-floor window.
Elena Oldenburg, 30, allegedly took her 13-year-old son, identified by local media as Misha, and jumped out of the window in the city of Tolyatti in Russia’s southern Samara Oblast region.
Because she could not afford a wheelchair she had to carry Misha around everywhere she went.
According to reports, the mother was exhausted from taking care of her teenage son, who suffered from cerebral palsy.
It is believed that Oldenburg killed them both because of the difficult situation.
The dead bodies were found near their block of flats at around 10pm.
A neighbour told local media: "She did not have a wheelchair and always had to carry him (Misha) in her arms.
"She always cuddled him. She was calm and never shouted at her son. She also never complained about anything. I think she could not handle the enormous burden."
One of Oldenburg’s relatives said: "She was a single mother, I think she did it because of exhaustion."
A female shop attendant who was one of the last people to see Oldenburg alive said: "I saw her buying some food earlier that day. She was upset about something. In the evening I saw an ambulance near her block of flats and then heard the news."
According to reports, Elena Oldenburg did not have close friends and lived alone with her son.
Police are investigating the incident.
