Nicola Sturgeon dubs Boris Johnson, Jacob Rees-Mogg and Michael Gove 'the mad Brexiteers' after meeting with EU's Brexit boss

Scotland’s First minister chief singled out Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and Jacob Rees-Mogg for scorn after a meeting with the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier in Brussels.

She accused the trio of “peddling myths” during the referendum and of “trying to mislead people and pull the wool over their eyes”.

She said: “One of the problems for the UK Government at the moment is they’re not really listening to anybody but the mad Brexiteers.”

It came as she insisted Theresa May will have to accept remaining in the customs union to break the deadlock on Brexit.

She said that in her view it was the only “credible and sustainable” option – adding: “It’s a question of whether they concede that now or are forced to concede that later.”

Mrs Sturgeon’s trips to Brussels have infuriated leading eurosceptics who suspect the First Minister is deliberately undermining Theresa May.

Yesterday she insisted she wasn’t conducting a “parallel negotiation” with Mr Barnier “however unfortunate that might feel at times”.

Mrs Sturgeon reiterated that any special deal for Northern Ireland would “raise real issues for Scotland”.
