President Trump Commutes Alice Marie Johnson's Life Sentence

President Trump has commuted the life sentence of Alice Marie Johnson, the 63-year-old great-grandmother who has been behind bars for a drug-related charge since 1996.

The news comes a week after Kim Kardashian West paid a visit to the White House to discuss Johnson’s sentence and prison reform with Trump.

In an exclusive interview with Mic, Kardashian West stated that Johnson receiving life without the possibility of parole for a first-time nonviolent offense was unacceptable. With the help of her personal attorney Shawn Chapman Holley, Kardashian West has been working to procure legal funds for Johnson’s pardon and bring awareness to her case.

According to Mic, Johnson was convicted for her role in a cocaine trafficking ring in Memphis, Tennessee. She was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, with an additional 25 years tacked onto her life sentence. Thanks to Kardashian West’s efforts and Trump’s clemency, Johnson will soon be released from a federal prison in Aliceville, Alabama.
