Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ families competed to out do each other at an elaborate pre-wedding dance off before the couple said their ‘I do’s’ yesterday.

The 36-year-old actress shared a series of photos and videos on Instagram of the sangeet celebrations; a huge party which occurs before a Hindu wedding and can last for several days.

Priyanka looked stunning in a golden sari as she danced with her 26-year-old husband-to-be who donned an Indian inspired blue suit.

The Instagram videos, posted the day after their nuptials on Saturday, showed the family of the bride and groom battling it out on the dance floor as they each put on musical numbers that shared stories about their backgrounds.

    WHAT IS THE SANGEET?

The Sangeet is one of many pre-wedding events that occurs before a Hindu, Punjabi, and Gujurati wedding ceremony.

It comes from the Sanskrit word meaning ‘sung together’.

The families of the bride and groom come together to celebrate the union through music, songs and dance.

Previously, the ceremony would last for several days, but now it is usually limited to one day or one evening.

‘It all began as a fierce song & dance competition between the families but ended, as always, as a huge celebration of love,’ Chopra wrote in a caption on Instagram.

‘Nick and I were looking forward to the Sangeet (music evening), another pre wedding ritual.. And to see what each side had put together.’

She continued: ‘And what a performance it was. Each family telling our stories through song and dance, filled with lots of laughter and love. We were both filled with gratitude for the effort, the love and laughter will carry the memories of this special evening for the rest of our lives.’

Chopra concluded with: ‘It is an amazing start to a lifetime of togetherness for our families and friends.. #grateful.’

The couple kicked off the three day of celebrations with a mehendi party on Friday, followed by the gangeet that evening.

The couple exchanged vows in a Christian ceremony on Saturday, with Nick’s pastor father, Paul Kevin Jonas Sr officiating. Priyanka wore a stunning custom gown from Ralph Lauren – the designer of choice for the entire wedding.

With Ralph Lauren Collection being their choice for the 2017 Met Gala, it’s no surprise the entire wedding party was kitted out in the designer gear. Lauren is a close friend of the couple.

Men wore black tuxedos and women donned pastels for the ceremony on the back lawn.

Ralph Lauren has previously only designed and made wedding gowns for family members including his daughter, daughter-in-law and his niece – but made an exception for the TV-and-movie star.

The designer was so keen to dress the stunning Baywatch reboot movie actress for her wedding he came to her with an array of designs for her to chose from.

While Chopra was a guest Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle’s May wedding, guests on Saturday included Parineeti Chopra, Madhu Chopra, Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner, actress Elizabeth Chambers, The Only Way Is Essex star Jasmin Walia, plus the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was slated for the reception, PinkVilla.com reported.

      What is the Mehendi Ceremony?

In the lead-up to an Indian wedding, the bride and her female party traditionally have henna paste applied.

While the bride usually has the intricate design drawn on her hands and feet, the guests regularly join in with inkings on their hands and some of those who are unmarried believe the process will bring them good luck to find their own husband soon.

Also referred to as Mehndi, the name derives from the ancient Indian language, Sanskrit and describes the formula of crushed dried henna plant leaves. The body art stains the skin for a few days.

It’s popular in India, Pakistan and in many Arabic-speaking countries.

Women traditionally found the process relaxing in the lead-up to their nuptials and the soothing application is said to cool the body.

Men also have the designs drawn on their hands – usually the palm – during the celebration of singing and dancing.

At the start of the Mehendi party, the bride-to-be is usually presented with a silk cloth by her future mother-in-law which she must then unroll in the direction of the groom’s mother before kissing her hand.

Guests can then enjoy snacks of fruits, nuts, and pastries before the mother-in-law places a gold coin in her soon-to-be daughter’s hand for good luck and the henna painting can begin.

If the bride cries during the festivities, it’s also considered good luck.

Later, they shared pictures on their social media of the Mehendi ceremony, which involves applying henna on the bride’s hands as a good omen.

‘One of the most special things that our relationship has given us is a merging of families who love and respect each others’ faiths and cultures. And so planning our wedding with an amalgamation of both was so so amazing,’ Chopra wrote on Instagram.

The pictures showed the couple laughing and surrounded by family and friends, as an artisan applied henna on Chopra’s palms.

With the venue lit up by laser beam lights and fireworks, the Bollywood star and American singer spared no expense and lavished attendees with epic welcoming packs – which include Indian treats, shoes and a much needed ‘information guide’ for their three-day extravaganza. The Indian ceremony takes place Sunday.

Luckily, those who weren’t familiar with the various events surrounding an Indian wedding were handed a card title ‘Indian wedding for dummies’ with ‘your handy-dandy Indian wedding planner’ written on it, according to reports.

Cell phone use was strictly prohibited inside the $60,000-a-night venue.

Everyone was required to keep hold of a card that had to be displayed at all times for access and it could be confiscated on request for a guest to leave.

The pair also set up a wishing well tree, which is becoming hugely popular in the wedding industry, allowing invitees to hang up messages of love and support.

On Sunday, Chopra shared a picture and a two-second video of a cricket match, captioning it ‘team bride vs team groom #cricket’.

The venue of the wedding, the Umaid Bhavan palace in the heritage north Indian city of Jodhpur, was cordoned off to the public, and Indian media reported that the couple had asked guests not to carry cellphones to any of the ceremonies.

The palace is home to the Jodhpur royal family, and is believed to be the world’s sixth largest private residence. Part of the palace has been converted into a Taj heritage hotel with peacocks roaming 26 acres of landscaped gardens.

A night’s stay in the Grand Presidential suite can cost more than 500,000 rupees ($7,168), according to the hotel website.

Chopra and Jonas became were engaged earlier this year after a whirlwind courtship that began at an Oscars after-party last year.

Chopra, who headlined three seasons of the ABC crime drama Quantico, is one of Bollywood’s biggest female leads with acting credits in several big-ticket films.
