Queen Elizabeth making Emma Thompson a dame

Here’s some news you might want to keep in mind next time you bump into Love Actually and Sense and Sensibility star Emma Thompson at the supermarket: The much-beloved actress and Oscar-winning screenwriter was today awarded a damehood in the so-called “Queen’s birthday honors list,” which recognizes the achievements of “extraordinary people across the United Kingdom.”

Other entertainment notables recognized in the list include classicist Professor Mary Beard, who has also been made a dame; Keira Knightley, who was given an OBE, meaning she is an Officer of the British Empire; Nobel Prize-winning novelist Kazuo Ishiguro, who has been awarded a knighthood; and actor Tom Hardy, who can now claim the title Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (or CBE, for short).

Previous actresses to receive damehoods include Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, and Maggie Smith.
