Runner in his 50s collapses and dies five miles into the Belfast Marathon as temperatures soar to 68F

A man in his 50s has died after collapsing in the early stages of today’s Belfast Marathon.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed the tragic death and said a post mortem examination will be carried out in due course – though the death is not being treated as suspicious.

It is believed to have happened in the early stages of the event, close to Victoria Park at about five miles into the marathon.

The event’s organisers said two ambulances were quickly at the scene and the man was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital, but later passed away.

Temperatures at the marathon hit 68F, although it’s unclear if the heat contributed to his death.

According to the BBC, it was the man’s first marathon, although he was a runner.

Belfast Live reports that other participants tried to save him with CPR – and a spokesperson for the event said help arrived very quickly.

‘It is deeply regretful that this has happened today,’ she added.

‘He collapsed at about mile six. It was really early on.

‘Two members of our senior management team went to visit his family in hospital and offer their condolences. He went to the Royal Victoria Hospital but unfortunately passed away.’ 

A spokesman for Northern Ireland Ambulance confirmed two crews rushed to treat a man who collapsed on the Sydenham Bypass at around 10am. 

A postmortem will be carried out to determine the cause of his death.

The marathon event saw around 17,000 people taking part at the 37th annual run.

The death comes just weeks after MasterChef finalist Matt Campbell, 29, died running the London marathon.

Mr Campbell was attempting to raise money for charity when he collapsed at the 22.5 mile mark, close to Shadwell.

Hundreds of friends and supporters arrived in the capital today for the ‘Finish for Matt’ campaign organised by Martin Doyle.

Matt Campbell was known for appearing on Masterchef. He had been devastated by the death of his father and was hoping to raise money for charity when he died
