Serial killer linked to 20 murders ‘has a lot to do’ as he’s freed from jail

A serial killer dubbed 'The Serpent' who police have linked to the murders of 20 people in a series of chilling crimes has admitted he has "a lot to do", after he was freed from prison.

Charles Sobhraj, the man convicted of killing 20 people throughout the 1970s and 1980s, found himself released after nearly two decades in a Nepal prison.

The now 78-year-old had killed dozens of people on a known "hippie trail", targeting western backpackers by poisoning their food and drink, as well as robbing them after they had succumbed to the contamination.

Sobhraj is set to head to Paris after officials in Nepal barred him from stepping foot in the country for the next decade.

A Supreme Court made the decision to release Sobhraj a year early from his 20-year sentence, citing his age as a reason for doing so.

The 78-year-old, upon his release, said: "I feel great… I have a lot to do. I have to sue a lot of people. Including the state of Nepal."

A slate of chilling nicknames followed the sick killer around following his arrest, including the bikini killer and The Serpent, the latter given for his use of disguises and police evasion.

During his stint in prison, Sobhraj married Nihita Biswas, 34, much to the delight of his mother-in-law.

Sakuntala Thapa said: "I'm happy and have great respect for our judiciary and Supreme court."

Despite his charges and near-two decade stint in prison, Sobhraj denied killing American tourist Connie Jo Bronzich in 1975, although was found guilty of her murder.

He was also found guilty of killing Bronzich's friend, Laurent Carriere, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The 78-year-old had previously escaped prison, managing to sneak out of India's Tihar jail after drugging prison guards with cookies and cakes laced with sleeping pills.
