Bone-headed volunteers on Thursday accidentally pumped water back into the partially flooded Thai cave a group of soccer players is stranded in — as rescuers were frantically trying to get the water out, officials said.
Operation commander Narongsak Osotthanakorn said the unregistered helpers goofed when they decided to direct the flow of extracted water into the ground, resulting in a stream returning to the subterranean Tham Luang cave — hindering the rescue efforts, the Bangkok Post reported.
“They may have some belief that their technique is effective for ground water drainage,” Osotthanakorn said.
“Anything that is not in the plan must be discussed with us first,” he added, saying the volunteers hadn’t even officially registered to help.
Officials have been working around the clock to rid the cave of water before heavy rains arrive this weekend.
“We are racing against water,” Osotthanakorn said.
