Gangs are flooding the UK with “super weed” from California as drinkers turn to cannabis to get through Dry January.
Dealers are cashing in on a surge in demand from lockdown boozers getting high to avoid alcohol.
We spoke to one who smuggles potent marijuana strains from the US state and sells it in Liverpool and Manchester.
He said: “I’ve had loads of new buyers who don’t normally smoke weed but need something to replace the hit they get off booze. Forget Dry January, this is high January.”
Showing us a box of several bags, ordered off the dark web, he added: “These are 3.5g bags, people are paying £80-£120.
“Demand right now is for the stronger Cali stuff.”
Ganja dealers are setting up accounts on Instagram and encrypted sites like Telegram.
One UK Telegram seller known as The High Supplier pledged: “Stealth packaging. 1-3 days delivery.”
Elsewhere a Bloomreach study found online searches for CBD oil products, including “edibles”, soared 1,300% last year, with 31,000 this month alone.
Meanwhile, we recently reported how jails should hand out free cannabis to help prisoners overcome their drug problems – says Police and Crime Commissioner for North Wales Arfon Jones.
Mr Jones, 66, says the tactic could reduce violence in prisons and prevent overdose deaths by reducing the temptation to use illegal drugs.
“Let’s supply cannabis in controlled conditions and see if offences reduce,” he said.
He pointed out that many prisoners are given heroin substitute such as methadone help them manage their addictions while inside.
Also, he says, prisons are overflowing with illegally smuggled – and often very dangerous – opioid drugs and offering free cannabis could help stem the tide.
“If they’re on opioids, why can’t they be prescribed cannabis?” he added.
