A traffic crash killed a 41-year-old woman and her 5-year-old child on Friday night in Aurora and a driver has been arrested on investigation of DUI and vehicular homicide, police said.
The crash happened at about 8:10 p.m. at Chambers Road and East 6th Avenue, police said in a news release.
The driver of a red Honda CRV was northbound in the 500 block of Chambers when the vehicle crossed the center lane into southbound traffic. The red CRV hit an electric bicycle at the entrance of shopping center, the bicyclist was able to jump out of the way and avoid the collision, police said.
The driver of the red Honda kept going north when it hit another CRV that was eastbound on 6th Avenue, according to the release. The suspect vehicle, the red Honda, then hit two other vehicles that were stopped at a traffic light in the southbound lanes of Chambers Road.
The CRV that was hit had four family members inside, police said. A 41-year-old women in the CRV that was hit died at the scene, police said. A 43-year-old man, a 5-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy who were in the CRV were taken to a local hospital where the girl died of her injuries. The man is in critical condition and the boy was treated and released. People in the other vehicles were not injured.
The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office will release the names of the victims.
Police identified the suspect as Juan Pablo Pasqal-Licea, 30, of Aurora. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment and then arrested on suspicion of DUI and vehicular homicide. He remains in custody.
The intersection was shutdown overnight as part of an ongoing investigation. It reopened at about 4:30 a.m., police said.
