Teacher fired when porn career was exposed by student wins unfair dismissal case

A university lecturer who was sacked when his employer found out he used to be a porn star has won his unfair dismissal case.

Ruggero Freddi, 46, will now have to be paid damages by Rome’s Sapienza University after it gave him the boot for his career in gay adult films.

Performing under the name Carlo Masi, he was employed by one of the biggest gay porn studios in the US, Colt, starring in films such as Big ‘N’ Plenty and Man Country.

In 2009, at the age of 34, he went on to start a new career as a maths professor after leaving porn, returning to Italy to teach.

He would go on to earn a Bachelor's and then a Masters' degree in maths.

Then, in 2020, he completed a PhD in mathematical models for engineering.

He joined the engineering faculty at Sapienza in 2017

But eventually, his old career was discovered. After posting an image of himself tensing, someone is understood to have recognised him and gone to a reporter.

“Some students reported the photo in a few sites and from there my former life as a porn actor emerged,” he toldLa Repubblica .

“To be honest, it wasn’t exactly a secret.”

He added: “It’s just my opinion. But I felt like there were prejudices around me, which were beyond my skills as a teacher and as a data analyst, the role I occupy today”.

At the time he explained how he didn’t regret the decision to star in the films and had simply done it to “earn more”.

Now, with his legal victory secure, he told the publication: “I was forced to sue. And I won. I hope my case gives courage to all PhD students who are exploited after years of studies and specialisations.”

Freddi met his husband, Gustavo Alejandro Leguizamon, through his time in the porn industry – he too was a porn star but has now completed a PhD.

Speaking about he first got into porn, Freddi explained how he had originally wanted to go into engineering.

He added: "I was offered to do a film in the USA. I thought, 'Why not?' A job that helps me earn more and is a more entertaining career," he said.
