Thanksgiving Day 2021 updates – Trump issues holiday statement after Macy’s parade and hints at 2024 election run

FORMER President Donald Trump might have just hinted another presidential run in his Thanksgiving message to the country.

“A very interesting time in our Country, but do not worry, we will be great again – and we will all do it together,” Trump said in a statement.

“America will never fail, and we will never allow it to go in the wrong direction. Too many generations of greatness are counting on us. Enjoy your Thanksgiving knowing that a wonderful future lies ahead!”

Trump has hinted in the past that he hopes to seek another term in office since his failure to do so in the 2020 election, however, he has yet to formally challenge current President Joe Biden.

He told Fox News he will make a decision on another run after the 2022 midterms.

“I am certainly thinking about it and we’ll see,” he said. “I think a lot of people will be very happy, frankly, with the decision, and probably will announce that after the midterms.”

    BALLOON BLUNDERS: TOM KAT

Many years earlier, a 60-foot Tom Kat Balloon nearly caused a plane to crash.

Despite, Macy's spreading the word to New York news outlets to warn pilots to keep away from the large balloons, one plane didn't steer clear of trouble.

The shocking incident happened during a time where Macy's would free the balloons into the sky at the end of the parade — something which hasn't been done since the nearly fatal event.

However, people were given rewards if they located the balloons afterward.

About 30 minutes after the balloons were released on November 24, 1932, a flying instructor and her student flew their plane into the yellow-striped Tom Kat balloon, The Hatching Cat explains.

The plane ultimately went into a tailspin after fabric from the balloon covered the aircraft's left-wing.

But as the plane was approximately 250 feet above rooftops over Queens, the plane was able to resume flying and safely land.

BALLOON BLUNDERS: SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, PART 2

According to Mike Goldenthal, who saw the incident from his apartment, the big blue hedgehog "smashed into the lamp post, broke the lamp post, and a large part of the lamp went and, it looked like it smacked this fella on the back."

The balloon was immediately deflated and didn't finish marching in the parade.

    BALLOON BLUNDERS: SONIC THE HEDGEHOG

Back in 1993, the Sonic the Hedgehog balloon was plagued by strong winds, which caused the inflatable character to crash into a pole on West 58th street.

Sonic the Hedgehog wasn't strong enough for the wind speeds and got hit in the left eye with a lamp post.

The impact caused a section of the balloon to tear and a part of the streetlight to fall into the paradegoers.

Both a 10-year-old girl and an off-duty police officer were injured in the balloon mishap.

Additionally, one woman was hit with helium fumes. All three victims were treated on the scene.

    BALLOON BLUNDERS

These are Macy's Thanksgiving Parade's most infamous balloon accidents from Sonic bursting to a cat that almost caused a plane crash.

The spectacular annual event has come a long way since it was first held on November 27, 1924, when it was called the Macy's Christmas Parade and was without massive floating balloons.

As multiple decades have passed since the first parade, here's a look back at some of the shocking mishaps that occurred over the years.

WHY DO THE DALLAS COWBOYS AND DETROIT LIONS ALWAYS HAVE A THANKSGIVING DAY GAME?

There is no official reason that the Lions and the Cowboys always play on Thanksgiving, but it has become a sort of tradition at this point.

The Lions began playing on Thanksgiving in 1934, while the Cowboys began their Thanksgiving games in 1966.

In 2021, the Detroit Lions will play their 82nd annual Thanksgiving Day game.

This is the most any team has played on the holiday, cementing them in their traditional spot.

When former team owner George A. Richards purchased the Lions in 1934, he wanted to build a bigger fanbase. He decided to host the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving Day, bringing in thousands of fans.

Ever since, the Lions have hosted a game each year on the holiday – the only time they didn't was during WWII.

Tex Schramm, the general manager of the Dallas Cowboys in 1966, decided that in order to have more national recognition, the team should host a holiday game.

Each year since – except for 1975 and 1977 – the Dallas Cowboys have hosted a Thanksgiving Day football game.

WHAT IS THE NATIONAL DOG SHOW?

Beginning in 1876, purebred dogs started to be exhibited at the Centennial International Exposition, which was also known as the first official World's Fair to take place in America.

From 1879 until 1928, the Kennel Club of Philadelphia put on an annual dog show.

Nearing the end of the Great Depression, the club began showing dogs once more in 1932, and have continued ever since.

In 2002, the president of NBC at the time, Jon Miller, took the idea of a national dog show to the executives at the company.

His idea worked. Millions of viewers tuned in, and the National Dog Show became a family-favorite on Thanksgiving Day.

Presented each year by actor John O’Hurley and David Frei, the National Dog Show is sponsored by Nestlé Purina PetCare and sanctioned by the American Kennel Club and the Kennel Club of Philadelphia.

WHICH PRESIDENT MADE THANKSGIVING A NATIONAL HOLIDAY, CONTINUED

This Thanksgiving holiday was celebrated in accordance with Lincoln’s proclamation from 1863 until President Franklin Roosevelt moved the Thanksgiving holiday from the last Thursday of November to the penultimate Thursday in November, with the aim of boosting retail sales during the Great Depression.

Nevertheless, President Roosevelt had to reverse his decision in 1941 due to the severe opposition he encountered from supporters of Lincoln’s initial proclamation.

Thus, Roosevelt had to reluctantly sign a bill to officially make Thanksgiving the last Thursday in November.

WHICH PRESIDENT MADE THANKSGIVING A NATIONAL HOLIDAY?

During the civil war, President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863.

In declaring Thanksgiving Day as a holiday, President Lincoln stated: “commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife” and to “heal the wounds of the nation”.

Abraham Lincoln proclaimed that Thanksgiving was to be celebrated on the last Thursday of every November.

WHAT DOES THANKSGIVING MEAN IN THE 21ST CENTURY?

As a tradition that had a more religious significance, several Americans have veered away from this to focus on cooking and sharing meals during Thanksgiving in the 21st century.

Interestingly, turkey has become synonymous with Thanksgiving even though it is unclear whether Turkey was even part of the dishes offered during the first feast with the Native Americans in 1621.

Indeed, turkey has become a staple on Thanksgiving to the extent that the National Turkey Federation has estimated that about 90 percent of Americans eat turkey during Thanksgiving.

    WHEN WAS THE FIRST THANKSGIVING?

Colonists from Plymouth, England, shared a three-day feast with Native Americans in the New World in November of 1621.

However, this feast was neither named “Thanksgiving” nor did it inspire a national holiday.

Nevertheless, History.com stated that the meal did not feature desserts such as pies or cakes due to the dwindling supplies that the Pilgrims brought on the Mayflower.

Thus, the dishes were likely prepared using Native American methods.
