A dad-to-be who kicked his pregnant girlfriend in the stomach and told her “I’m going to kill you and the baby” in a drunken rage has avoided jail.
Alexander Simpson, 32, attacked his partner, then 14 weeks pregnant, after coming back from a night out in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, in August.
He dragged her upstairs by the arm, threw her on a bed so her head hit a wall, and then kicked her in a stomach.
The victim suffered from bruising and cramps but the baby was unharmed, Newcastle Crown Court heard.
However, Simpson was spared prison after a judge said he had felt "trapped" in the relationship but acted in a "cowardly" way, Chronicle Live reports.

Stuart Graham, prosecuting, said: "She saw the defendant slumped in the doorway and he lunged forward towards her, grabbed her by the hair and dragged her up the first flight of stairs.
"At the second flight, he lost his grip on her and grabbed her by the left arm, which caused bruising and a scratch.
"He dragged her up that flight of stairs and she was screaming.

"As he was doing this he was saying '"I f*****g hate you, I'm going to kill you, I'm going to kill the f*****g baby, you have no idea what I'm capable of, I will kill the baby'."
The victim managed to break free and ran to the bedroom and got her phone to call the police.
Mr Graham said: "He followed her and grabbed her by the breast and threw her on the bed, causing her to bang her head on the wall.

"He stood on the bed and kicked her in the stomach.
"She quickly put her hand to her stomach to protect the baby and curled her legs in."
Simpson then repeated his threat, saying: "I will kill this baby and I will kill you."
He then used both hands to grab her round the throat, the court heard.
At that point, police knocked on the door, which Simpson answered.
He told them it was just a verbal row and his partner was too afraid to tell them the truth at that stage, so they left.

Mr Recorder Kelly said: "You felt this relationship had gone too fast and was too intense and she was pregnant and you felt trapped.
"But rather than have the courage to try to end the relationship in a civilised way, you took out your resentment and anger on her, which was a cowardly thing to do, saying you were going to kill her and your unborn child.
"It must have been a terrifying ordeal for her and it was cowardly because you didn't have the courage to tell her you simply didn't want to continue the relationship."

Sue Hirst, defending, said Simpson had suffered with mental health problems and had consumed a large amount of alcohol on the day of the attack.
She added: "He is extremely remorseful about what took place, he cared for her a great deal but realises, on reflection, the relationship had progressed too quickly.
"He would not have deliberately hurt her if he had been sober."
Miss Hirst added that Simpson has since referred himself for counselling and has not drunk alcohol for three months.
The court heard he is not seeking contact with the baby.
