While eyes across the nation were glued to Wednesday morning’s first public impeachment hearings, the White House offered some alternative programming, tweeting a video in which President Trump said he was the victim of a “scam” of historic proportions.
“What’s going on now is the single greatest scam in the history of American politics,” said Trump in the 37-second clip, which does not explicitly refer to the impeachment hearings but was released once the hearings were in full swing.
“The Democrats want to take away your guns, they want to take away your healthcare, they want to take away your vote, they want to take away your freedom, they want to take away your judges, they want to take away everything,” claimed the president. “We can never let this happen.”
Trump went on to say that “our country is at stake like never before.
“They’re trying to stop me, because I’m fighting for you, and I’ll never let that happen,” he said in a closing vow to his base.
Trump’s personal account retweeted the video shortly after its Wednesday morning release — one of 10 messages he retweeted since the public hearing began around 10 a.m.
Many of the messages featured leading Republican lawmakers taking potshots at the Democrat-led impeachment process, despite the White House saying that the president was not keeping tabs on the proceedings.
“He’s in the Oval [Office] in meetings. Not watching,” Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham told reporters on Wednesday morning. “He’s working.”
