Ukraine accused Moscow of targeting residential and infrastructure areas in the city after weeks of daily attacks. On Saturday, a child was killed and five people injured, including three children, as rockets hit privately owned homes during bombarding of the region, said local governor Vitaliy Kim.

On Sunday missiles struck education and health facilities, as well as residential houses. Mr Kim said: “Around 2.30am a massive missile attack was launched.”

Mykolaiv, on the Southern Bug River about 20 miles upstream from the Black Sea, is a significant port and shipbuilding hub.
