Who is Monica Sherrod and how is she connected to Cash Gernon?
Monica Sherrod is the girlfriend of Cash's father, who has not been named.
Four-year-old Cash and his twin brother were staying in Sherrod's Mountain Creek home near Dallas, Texas.
According to police, the boys' father has not been in the house since March, and no word has been released on where he is located.
Sherrod reportedly called police just before 11am on May 15 to report Cash missing and showed police home security footage showing a man lift a sleeping child out of his crib.
Sherrod also reportedly identified the man as Darriynn Brown, who lived a few blocks away.
According to reports, Cash’s twin brother, who was not named, was taken from Sherrod’s home by state authorities.
Dallas police said the boy was now with his biological mother, Melinda Seagroves, and grandmother, Connie Ward, who had been searching for the boys for some time.
Seagroves had believed they were with their father and had no idea he had left them with Sherrod.
What has Darriynn Brown's mother said about her son?
New surveillance footage showed Brown lifting up the four-year-old boy from the crib of a house and leaving the premises around 5am on Saturday, May 15.
Cash was found stabbed to death and dumped on the street by a jogger on a residential street during the early morning hours of May 15, in the Mountain Creek area.
On May 18, the Dallas Medical Examiner revealed that Cash had died of multiple stab wounds.
Police said that his wounds appeared to have been afflicted by an "edged weapon".
A woman at Brown’s address, who identified herself as Mimi Brown, Darriynn Brown’s mother, told The Dallas Morning News her son was home all weekend and could not have kidnapped the boy.
”That’s not right at all,” the woman told the outlet.
“I know my son is traumatized. I know he’s scared, because I’m scared.”
Mimi said her son is a patient of Metrocare Services, which provides mental health care to children and adults.
She said he has several young cousins that he helps take care of and wouldn’t have hurt Cash.
”Darriynn is very kind,” she said. “I feel that he’s being framed.”
Brown is being held on charges of kidnapping and burglary, but police said more charges are likely “pending results from a forensic analysis.”
Authorities have not confirmed how Sherrod identified the suspect or Brown's relationship to Cash.
