Who was Jiah Khan? Actress subject of Death in Bollywood BBC documentary

RAISED in London, Jiah Khan quickly made it to Bollywood's big screen – featuring alongside some of India's biggest actors.

However at the age of 25, Jiah tragically died. The cause of death was officially announced a suicide, but now authorities are reopening her case to find out more.

Who was Jiah Khan?

Born in New York in 1988 as Nafisa Rizvi Khan, Jia became one of India’s rising film stars.

She was raised and educated in London before deciding to pursue an acting career in Mumbai.

She made her film debut in the 2007 Ram Gopal Verma film Nishabd and was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.

Why is Jiah Khan's suicide under investigation?

Jia Khan's suicide has remained a mystery to some fans since her death 7 years ago in June 2013.

She was tragically found hanging from a ceiling fan in her bedroom of her family's residence in Juhu, Mumbai.

A six-page suicide letter was also found by police at Jiah’s apartment.

It documented her troubled relationship with co-star and partner Sooraj Pancholi in detail – later it was also included in the CBI’s charge sheet.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced in January 2021 they were seeking further investigation into the actress's suicide case – with her British mother Rabia also claiming that her daughter was murdered.

The CBI revealed they would be investigating the scarf used in the incident as well as messages exchanged between her and Mr Pancholi.

However, Mr Pancholi’s lawyer have sought action against the CBI for contempt of court over their plea for further investigation.

He was initially arrested on June 10 2013, but was granted bail the following month.

Mr Pancholi continues to deny having anything to do with Jiah's death.

What Bollywood films did she star in?

Jiah shot to stardom early her career – propping up alongside some of the biggest actors and actresses in India.

In 2007, she shared screens with Bollywood royalty, Amitabh Bachchan in Speechless.

She also starred in the 2008 mystery flick, Ghajini, alongside box office actor Aamir Khan.

In 2010, she was also in the comedy Housefull.
