A woman viciously stabbed her boyfriend to death to get closer to one of two other men she was having sex with, a court heard.
Ezra McCandless, 22, killed Alex Woodworth, 24, in Menomonie, Wisconsin, in March 2018 – but insists she only did so in self defense.
But during her murder trial last week, prosecutors were told that McCandless killed Woodworth ‘in extreme anger,’ and that the couple shared ‘a twisted form of love.’
Jurors were told how McCandless knifed Woodworth down a deserted country road after they agreed to meet up to discuss breaking up.
The defendant’s attorney Aaron Nelson insisted the stabbing was an act of defense, telling jurors: ‘(Woodworth) holds her neck. He squeezes her neck.
‘And he looks her in the eyes. And she just stabs anywhere and everywhere that she can. She is terrified.’
After killing Woodworth, McCandless fled to a nearby farmhouse to seek help – with the word ‘BOY’ carved into the skin of her arm.
She initially claimed Woodworth had done it in retaliation after she stopped identifying as a man, an identity the victim is said to have preferred.
But McCandless later admitted to police that she’d carved the letters in herself, CourtTv reported.
She is said to have been sexually involved with two other men – John Hansen and Jason Mengel – and is said to have been desperate to rekindle a full relationship with Mengel.
Her defense lawyer Nelson also accused Woodworth of having an obsession with cannibalism, and claimed Woodworth believed ‘life has no meaning.’
Jurors have been tasked with deciding whether McCandless really did act in self-defense, or if she is guilty of first-degree murder.
The case continues.
