London’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone has expanded across all 33 Greater London Boroughs.

Sadiq Khan’s ULEZ plans landed on August 29, 2023, meaning all non-ULEZ compliant vehicles will be hit with a £12.50-a-day charge.

Several councils including, Bromley, Hillingdon, Harrow, Surrey, and Bexley challenged the London Mayor’s plans in the High Court, but eventually lost.

The ULEZ zone previously only included the inner city and neighbouring areas such as Putney, Dulwich, Finchley. and Chiswick.

But what happens if you are traveling to a London airport? What London airports sit within the ULEZ zone? And what vehicles are not compliant?

Sadiq Khan’s plans to expand ULEZ (pictured) into all Greater London Boroughs, not including the M25, has landed on August 29

The newly expanded ULEZ zone will now include some London airports. Pictured: New Ulez on the M4 near Heathrow Airport making drivers aware they will shortly be within the ULEZ zone

To the dismay of some jet-setters certain London airports are now included within the newly extended ULEZ zone.

As of August 29, the UK’s largest and busiest airport, Heathrow, will be a part of the zone.

So, if you are off to Heathrow from anywhere in the UK, or perhaps ferrying someone there you will still have to comply with ULEZ rules.

This means if your car is not ULEZ compliant you will be incur the £12.50 charge, Londoner or not.

London City Airport, located in East London on Hartmann Road, was already within the ULEZ zone prior to its expansion to London’s borders with Surrey, Essex, Kent and others.

However it isn’t all dull news for those wanting to go on holiday from a London airport as a few are still located outside the boundary.

Stansted, Luton and Gatwick airports are all situated outside of the ULEZ zone, meaning you may not get hit with the £12.50-a-day charge, unless you are travelling from or thought any of the London boroughs.

ULEZ was formed by Transport for London and announced by former Mayor of London, Boris Johnson in 2015.

However, Sadiq Khan spearheaded the plans to the present, implementing the ULEZ expansion on August 29.

The intention of the plans is to hand motorists with a fee for travelling in motors with high pollution levels.

ULEZ will be in effect every hour of every day of the year, with the exception of Christmas.

You can travel within the zone and avoid the £12.50 charge as long as your vehicle is ULEZ complaint, however if it is not you have to hand over the fee.

For your vehicle to be ULEZ complaint they must me the following standards, according to Transport for London:

Most petrol and diesel motors that are under the ages of 16 and six years old respectively, meet the emissions standards and qualify as being ULEZ compliant.

To ensure your motor meets the ULEZ standards enter your number plate here.

Grace periods have been introduced for disabled Londoners who meet certain criteria. Blue badge holders who do not meet these will still have to pay the £!2.50 a day fee. Pictured: Transport for London ULEZ sign

The ULEZ expansion has been a contentious topic for Londoners. in October 2022 60% of respondents were against the plans. Pictured: Sadiq Khan with an air quality monitoring station sign during a visit to Mums for Lungs community group in South Woodford, London

When the plans were initially discussed there were fears disabled Londoners as well as those on low incomes would be disproportionately affected.

In attempt to combat this, those who have disabilities as well as community transport providers have been given grace periods to help prepare for the change.

TfL have created grace periods for those in receipt of disability benefits and wheelchair accessible vehicles as well as vehicles which have disabled passengers.

As a result those who are eligible do not have to pay the £12.50 charge up until October 25, 2027.

It will still be compulsory for blue badge holders to pay the ULEZ fee if they do not meet the criteria for any of the three categories and are not eligible for the grace period.

For Londoners it is not only travelling to Heathrow that will be a concern in relation to the ULEZ charge.

As aforementioned, the boundary now stretches all the way into zone 6 to areas such as Bromley, Croydon, Sutton, Romford and more.

The M25 is not included in the Zone, however if you are concerned that you may now live or will be making a journey within the boundary you can check via our interactive ULEZ map below.

What London airports are in the ULEZ zone?
