Nicole Scherzinger put on a terrifying performance as she was covered in blood for the opening night of her new West End show.

The former Pussycat Dolls singer, 45, is starring in a new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Sunset Boulevard at The Savoy in London from this week until early January. And images from the opening night revealed how the former X Factor judge smeared herself in fake blood for one of the show’s horrifying scenes.

The star, who over the summer revealed she had got engaged to former rugby player Thom Evans, was also photographed outside the theatre after the performance, looking fresh-faced as she signed autographs for fans. Opening night came shortly after Nicole shared a picture on Instagram showing her posing in front of an old-fashioned red telephone box with the caption: “Guess who’s moved to London?”

The former pop star is starring in the musical as Norma Desmond – a silent-film star who dreams of making her comeback so enlists the help of a struggling screenwriter. But they become embroiled in a volatile affair that threatens to destroy them both.

The musical is based on the 1950 film of the same name – and the role of Norma has previously been played by the likes of Petula Clark and Glenn Close.

Nicole’s return to the stage comes eight years after she was nominated for an Olivier Award for her portrayal of Grizabella in Cats.

Announcing her role in the show in May, Nicole said: “I can't wait to think and play outside the box with brilliant, cutting-edge director Jamie Lloyd. And to have the honour of working with the legend himself, Andrew Lloyd Webber, to bring this timeless masterpiece to life.”

Meanwhile Andrew said: “Nicole is one of the finest singers I have worked with, and I can't wait to get started on this exciting show with her and the rest of this brilliant team.”

The gruesome and bloody snaps of Nicole are worlds away from how she has been spotted recently over summer. Last month she was photographed looking sensational with a shorter, tousled mullet-like hair do.

Also last month, she was seen showing off her killer curves and washboard abs in a tiny cobalt blue bikini whilst on holiday with fiancé Thom. It was also reported in July that Nicole won’t be inviting any of her former Pussycat Dolls bandmates to her wedding because of ‘bad blood’ between them.

Formed in 1995 as a burlesque troupe consisting of Carmit Bachar, Ashley Roberts, Jessica Sutta and Kimberly Wyatt, Pussycat Dolls later welcomed Nicole, Melody Thornton and Kaya Jones to form their pop group. But things turned sour in 2010 with a split, when it was reported that other members weren't happy about Nicole being the lead singer.

"Nicole doesn't want to invite one and not another, only for those missing out to start causing trouble," a source told Heat Magazine. "There's so much toxic energy from that part of her life, she doesn't want to bring any of it into her dream wedding."
