Around 100 monkey corpses have been found on the outskirts of a remote village.

The shocking discovery was made by local farmers in Jagadevpur Mandal, a village in Munigadapa in the Siddipet district of India, and now police are suspecting that it was caused by intentional poisoning. And even more shockingly, it is though that the monkeys were killed somewhere else before being dumped on the outskirts of the village, a senior official from the Veterinary and Animaly Husbandry Department said.

Images from the area taken by local officials show a huge pile of dead monkeys piled on top of each other. Local news outlet Uniindia reported that locals originally thought the monkeys died after drinking water contaminated with pesticides – but the truth was far worse.

As a result of the grim discovery, an investigation is now underway to find out who is responsible for the mass killing – with some on Indian social media claiming that they could have come from a medical testing facility, although this has not been confirmed. The village where they were found is made up of 24 smaller villages, and is around 568 metres above sea level.

The entire area has a population of more than one million people, but is still one of the smallest in the country, with its nearest main city being Hyderabad. Farming is the main source of income in the area, and monkeys have been known to be an issue for locals for several years.
