RESIDENTS who live in a town which is being "swallowed" by 550 newbuilds say their roads can't handle it.<\/p>\n
Developer London Square plans to build seven tower blocks up to eight storeys high in Crayford, South East London.<\/p>\n

The company purchased the former Electrobase site from Skillcrown and Purelake NewHomes last month.<\/p>\n
The \u00a3180million development will have a total of 559 homes, including 240 for shared ownership and social rent.<\/p>\n
John Harris, 65, said his family are considering moving to the north of England because they are fed up of developments in outer London towns.<\/p>\n
"I'm just fed up with seeing the whole area in general being overloaded with new homes," he told MyLondon.<\/p>\n
"The infrastructure can't cope now, roads are overcrowded. It's just getting to be a joke. <\/p>\n "Recently, it took me an hour and three quarters to get from here in Crayford to Hawley, which is four miles away."<\/p>\n Kathy, 67, who has lived in Crayford for her whole life, described the newbuilds as "monstrosities".<\/p>\n While Katie Walker, 39,\u00a0added: "That's a lot of people to be building for. This is just a little town. I know we need housing, but they don't seem to think about doctors, schools, all that kind of stuff, and the congestion as well."<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Planning consent was finalised in August for the site by the London Borough of Bexley.<\/p>\n A London Square spokesperson said: "As part of the scheme,\u00a0a riverside walk will be created along the River Cray, opening up the site for the first time for residents and local people \u00a0to walk and cycle.<\/p>\n "London Square always takes a collaborative approach when delivering new homes and we are working with the London Borough of Bexley and residents in the area, to address any concerns raised by some local people.<\/p>\n "A dedicated liaison team will begin talking to residents in the area, in advance of construction getting underway next year."<\/p>\n "The shared ownership homes will be made available first to people living in the area, giving them the opportunity to own a home of their own," they added.<\/p>\n The Sun has contacted the local authority for comment.<\/p>\n<\/picture>OUT WITH A BANG <\/span><\/p>\n
