Thirteen law enforcement agents were ambushed and shot at point-blank range in the southwestern Mexico state of Guerrero on Monday.<\/p>\n
Police were responding to shots fired call when gunmen surrounded them on the side of the Acapulco-Zihuatanejo road in El Papayo, a neighborhood in the municipality of Coyuca de Ben\u00edtez.<\/p>\n
Images viewed by DailyMail.com that are too sensitive to be published showed five uniformed police officers lying next to each other, including two handcuffed after they had been shot dead.<\/p>\n
Three other agents were found sitting together next to a fence.<\/p>\n
No arrests had been reported as of Tuesday afternoon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Among those murdered were Coyuca de Ben\u00edtez secretary for security Alfredo L\u00f3pez and municipal police director Honororio Salinas.<\/p>\n
L\u00f3pez was promote to his post in January, a month after David Borja resigned from the after he was wounded in the same road by a criminal gang.<\/p>\n
The National Guard deployed 300 guardsmen to support the Army and Marines and reinforce security in the city.<\/p>\n
‘It hurts a lot when a human being loses their life, be it a police officer who fulfills his responsibility or anyone,’ Mexican President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador told reporters Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Located west of the popular resort city of Acapulco, Cayuca de Ben\u00edtez has been known for the presence of organized crime.<\/p>\n

The Mexican government deployed 300 members of the National Guard to provide support to the Army and Marines as part of plans to reinforce security in the southwestern city of Coyuca de Ben\u00edtez following the execution of 13 law enforcement agents<\/p>\n
In June 2022, assailants gunned down former police director Rom\u00e1n Soto. He was working as a personal security guard for Mayor Osiel Pacheco.<\/p>\n
At least 20 criminal groups are known to have a presence across Guerrero’s 81 cities.<\/p>\n
Over the last 10 years, local, state and federal authorities have struggled with a wave of violence marked by criminal gangs battling for control of the lucrative opium poppy trade, as well as for other smuggling routes.<\/p>\n
During the first nine months of this year, nearly 1,100 people have been murdered in the state, up by nearly a quarter compared to the previous year, according to official data.<\/p>\n
