Email iwan.stone@mailonline.co.uk\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>British retirees are flocking to Thailand retirement resorts as they slam the NHS and\u00a0social care for driving them overseas.<\/p>\n<p>Exotic care homes cater to the UK pensioners in a tranquil scene of sunshine and stunning landscapes.<\/p>\n<p>And with low costs and hands-on care &#8211; the growing market of southeast Asian retirement resorts is the obvious choice as the elderly look for quality of life on a budget.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The government has already listed 30 Thai facilities it says meet its quality standards.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Care Resort Chiang Mai, 75-year-old former hospital manager Peter Mallard and his wife Rita, 81, are living it up thousands of miles from their former home in Eastbourne, east Sussex.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/03\/08\/77355699-12703563-image-a-1_1699000618838.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>British retirees are flocking to Thailand retirement resorts as they slam the NHS and social care for driving them overseas<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/03\/08\/77355697-12703563-image-a-2_1699000637229.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Exotic care homes cater to the UK pensioners in a tranquil scene of sunshine and stunning landscapes<\/p>\n<p>The luxury facility offers independent living, close care and dementia care alongside meals and activities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;People have the feeling, certainly as you get older, that you&#8217;re going to be stuck in a room in a lounge playing bingo once a week \u2026 whereas you just can&#8217;t compare [to Thailand],&#8217; Mr Mallard told The Telegraph.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His wife added: &#8216;Friends thought we were mad, but it&#8217;s the best move we&#8217;ve made.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>And it costs just \u00a3500 more for a month of 24-hour care than the weekly price of a care home in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>On average, it costs \u00a3800 a week for a place in a care home and \u00a31,078 a week for a nursing home, AgeUK says &#8211; although they add that some places charge more.<\/p>\n<p>Director of\u00a0Care Resort Chiang Mai, Peter Brown, chose to open the resort after seeing his mother&#8217;s experience in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>He says there are 47 staff for 33 guests &#8211; in contrast to what he claims is one for every ten patients in Britain.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;My mother had a nurse or carer visit once a week in the UK. Everything else is conducted by talking over the phone on a loudspeaker in a room asking her how she is&#8217;, he told Express.co.uk\u00a0last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr Brown continued: &#8216;If you want your parents or grandparents to have a high level of care and a high level of happiness in the rest of their life, Thailand is an option.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One Cornwall teacher &#8211; who did not want his name being used &#8211; told the broadsheet: &#8216;Obviously the price is a huge thing.\u00a0Dad owns a nice home in the UK; a four-bed bungalow that&#8217;s got a reasonable value.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;He doesn&#8217;t have a huge amount of savings and we&#8217;re in that middle sector that wouldn&#8217;t be able to gain any benefits or costs towards any care, or a very limited amount, so if he went into a UK care home then basically the cost of it would eat through the price of the house.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Dad&#8217;s always said he doesn&#8217;t want the government to take it in terms of inheritance tax.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/03\/08\/77355693-12703563-image-a-3_1699000755838.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The government has already listed 30 Thai facilities it says meet its quality standards<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/03\/08\/77355695-12703563-image-a-4_1699000766227.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>For a similar price to what families might expect to pay in the UK, sufferers of dementia could enjoy 1:1 round-the-clock care in facilities that &#8216;look like four-star hotels&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, The Guardian reported the &#8216;small but growing trend&#8217; of Brits sending relatives with dementia to Thailand to benefit from better care.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Caleb Johnson, a senior lecturer in human geography at Newcastle University, was quoted at the time as saying Thailand had a &#8216;long history of medical tourism&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>British-run and British-funded institutions were proving attractive alternatives for Brits dissatisfied with the options available in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>For a similar price to what families might expect to pay in the UK, sufferers of dementia could enjoy 1:1 round-the-clock care in facilities that &#8216;look like four-star hotels&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The Thaiger, an English-language publication based in Thailand, this summer detailed the &#8216;expansive gardens and enchanting lakes&#8217; to be enjoyed at retirement &#8216;havens&#8217; as the trend grows.<\/p>\n<p>Homes &#8211; some specialising in treating people with Alzheimer&#8217;s and dementia &#8211; were pictured in the hot Thai sun with large pools, parasols and palm trees lining outdoor squares.<\/p>\n<p>The facilities compete with each other, boasting hydrotherapy treatment options, spas and food grown on site &#8211; as well as gyms, salons and a place to play\u00a0p\u00e9tanque.<\/p>\n<p>The appeal of Thai facilities comes as waiting lists for routine NHS procedures have shot up to another record high in the wake of chaotic strikes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>England&#8217;s ever-growing backlog now stands at 7.75million patients \u2014 the equivalent of one in seven people.<\/p>\n<p>This includes nearly 400,000 stuck in the system for over a year, often in pain.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/03\/08\/77355701-12703563-image-a-14_1699000981077.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The appeal of Thai facilities comes as waiting lists for routine NHS procedures have shot up to another record high in the wake of chaotic strikes<\/p>\n<p>It is the highest number since records began in August 2007.
