Energy suppliers\u00a0can choose how much of that payment\u00a0is passed on to users.<\/p>\n

The scheme is\u00a0aimed at preventing total blackouts\u00a0during the colder weather by reducing pressure on the network.<\/p>\n

So far 1.4million\u00a0businesses\u00a0and households and 37 energy suppliers have signed up to take part in the scheme.<\/p>\n

It comes after\u00a0just under \u00a311 million was paid out last year\u00a0for those taking part.<\/p>\n

The scheme was launched following energy shortages last year, partly triggered by\u00a0Russian gas cuts to Europe\u00a0following its invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Families\u00a0don't have to switch off lights during a DFS period but are instead urged to switch off appliances such as washing machines.<\/p>\n
