<\/p>\nA FASHION retailer which as 400 locations nationwide is shutting one of its branches today for good.<\/p>\n
The branch of New Look\u00a0in Shirley,\u00a0Southampton, is closing for good today after a\u00a0string of closures.<\/p>\n

Although fans of the retailer won\u2019t have too far to go for their nearest outlet which is in the Westquay\u00a0Shopping\u00a0Centre in the city centre.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for New Look said: "As part of the normal course of\u00a0business, New Look occasionally closes stores, while also undertaking relocations and new site openings.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile some sites have closed recently, we have opened a number of new stores this year and we remain on the lookout for appropriate new opportunities across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n
Local residents were gutted by the announcement, with one saying it marks the "death of the high street".<\/p>\n
Another said: "Such a shame, it\u2019s been there since I was little. Was always the most affordable retail shop back then. Not so much now."<\/p>\n Meanwhile, a third sad shopper said: "Love it there many memories."<\/p>\n A fourth dejected local added: "Another shop in Shirley gone. It\u2019s been there since I was little. Shirley has little to offer anymore."<\/p>\n The closure comes during a tough time for the fashion retailer which has already shut a number of stores this year.<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Most recently, it pulled down the shutters on its branch in the Maybird Shopping Park, Stratford-upon-Avon, on October 28.<\/p>\n It also closed one of its\u00a0Worcestershire stores for good\u00a0on September 9 and another in Beverley, East\u00a0Yorkshire, the day before.<\/p>\n The retailer shut up shop in\u00a0Slough and Windsor on September 5\u00a0and pulled down the\u00a0shutters on its store in the Cornmarket, Lancaster, on September 2.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, its shop in the Crossgates Shopping Centre,\u00a0Leeds, closed to customers at the end of August.<\/p>\n It shut six branches in January and February this year too.<\/p>\n However, it is not all doom and gloom for the retailer.<\/p>\n The Fosse Park Shopping Park branch in Leicestershire\u00a0pulled down its shutters in the\u00a0summer\u00a0to\u00a0make way for a bigger venue.<\/p>\n New Look has also opened stores in Grimsby and Leicester in recent weeks too.<\/p>\n It said it has plans to open more stores in 2023, though it hasn't confirmed how many and where in the UK they will be.<\/p>\n The fortunes of New Look have been reflected in the situation with many high street retailers who have taken a battering as shoppers move online for their needs.<\/p>\n Shops including\u00a0Poundland and\u00a0Homebase\u00a0are among those pulling down the shutter on locations for the final time.<\/p>\n The\u00a0cost of living crisis,\u00a0high inflation\u00a0and\u00a0energy costs\u00a0are all taking their toll on\u00a0retailers.<\/p>\n Many shoppers do not have extra cash to spend on anything other than\u00a0household bills\u00a0and essential items.<\/p>\n Rising fuel costs\u00a0and expensive parking also mean that it is also often cheaper and easier for people to get what they need online.<\/p>\n Figures from the\u00a0British Retail Consortium\u00a0(BRC) this\u00a0summer\u00a0found the UK had lost 6,000 stores over a five-year period.<\/p>\n Meanwhile some retailers are closing some shops to open bigger and better ones nearby, so it's not all bad news for shoppers.<\/p>\n![](\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/bbhw95-shops-ivegate-city-centre-848206617-1.jpg\")
