One of Vladimir Putin’s closest allies on the international stage raised alarm bells as he claimed the world is “plunging into chaos”.

During an address at the 19th Meeting of Heads of Security and Intelligence Agencies from Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Member States, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko claimed the nuclear deterrence has been weakened. He said, as quoted by the Russian state news agency Tass: “The world is plunging into chaos with unpredictable consequences.

“No one has yet been able to find even a fragile balance [between opposing forces]. The system of counterbalancing forces based on inter-complementary treaties has been destroyed, particularly in the field of nuclear deterrence.”

The spectre of nuclear weapons use returned to the centre stage in Europe last year, after Lukashenko’s ally Putin ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

In the first few days of the illegal military action, Putin ordered to put Russia’s nuclear deterrence forces on high alert.

This summer, he claimed to have stationed a batch of tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. During a public event in St Petersburg, he explained the move was about “containment” and to urge anyone “thinking of inflicting a strategic defeat on us” to think again.

When asked about the possibility of using those weapons, he replied: “Why should we threaten the whole world? I have already said that the use of extreme measures is possible in case there is a danger to Russian statehood.”

Over the past 22 months, Putin’s mouthpieces and allies including former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev have stoked fears of a nuclear escalation against NATO members.

In his address, Lukashenko placed the blame for the “chaos” and falling security on a number of leading organisations including the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the Red Cross and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

He claimed: “They have turned into platforms for doublespeak and tools to serve and implement the interests of [only select] global players.”
