Israel has criticised China’s response to the Hamas’ attack, expressing “deep disappointment” to China’s Middle East envoy Zhai Jun.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry highlighted China’s lack of clear condemnation for the terrorist act and absence of recognition of Israel’s right to self-defence, essential for any sovereign nation facing such a brutal attack.
But speaking to Express.co.uk, Dr Stepan Stepanenko, Director of Forward Strategy, said that despite making a statement, China’s ambiguous stance regarding the Hamas attack conveys a clear message.
He said: “China’s stance as one of two superpowers means that it has to respond to global events.
“Although a statement was made, lack of a clear denouncement of the Hamas attack sends a clear message that despite its secular policies and domestic oppression of the Muslim minorities, China will do everything in its power to capitalise on the situation in an attempt to gain influence among the smaller countries in the (Middle East and North Africa) MENA, many of whom suffer from Islamic radicalism.

“As the Chinese try to avoid commitment to any of the sides, their lack of condemnation is taken by Israel and the rest of the world as tacit approval of Hamas actions – approval of an attack on the sovereignty of an independent state and on innocent civilians.”
He added: “Unsurprising, considering the approval that China extends to the Russian destruction of Ukrainian cities, and killing of at least 1700 Ukrainian children. Today’s attack on the Israeli diplomat in Beijing may also be the result of China’s lack of condemnation.
“Although information on the incident is scarce, it is certain that failing to denounce terrorism, China invites those representing the worst of humanity to cause greater harm, and it will be only a matter of time until it affects the Chinese directly.”
