Prince George thinks rugby is ‘tedious’ as expert examines William’s telling off

Prince William and Prince George were caught in a rather involved father-son conversation at last weekend’s Rugby World Cup game.

The oldest of the future king's children was sat by his father’s side as he watched Wales and Argentina in France’s Stade de Marseille on Saturday, October 14. Many outlets reported that at one point, it looked like William was giving his eldest a stern telling-off with strict finger waggles from the elder and eye rolls from the younger.

This is not easy to verify so the Daily Star spoke to body-language expert Inbaal Honigmaal in the hope she might be able to shed some light on what the two royals were chatting about.

But rather than being bored stiff just by his dad, Inbaal reckons it might also have been the rugby game that was failing to flap his flag. She told The Daily Star: “Nearly all the photos from this event seem to feature the young Royal with his irises rolling upwards. This eye-rolling very likely indicates that he finds the event tedious, and is imagining himself doing something else.

“This boredom may also extend to his father's animated conversation. Prince George isn't tense here, he's definitely calm, which we can tell because his mouth isn't pressed in any photos. His lightly parted lips signify calm. Whatever Prince William is telling him, it's not a conversation that's disturbing his peace.”

Despite this conversation not perhaps being his all-time favourite, Inbaal thought it was clear the two had a good relationship, and that he does at least in part pay attention to what he says. She noted: “George's relationship with his father seems close. We can see that the heir to the throne has his hand on his son's shoulders, and the youngster isn't shrugging or pulling away.

“In another photo we can see George's head leaning towards William, showing that he is very attached to him. And in each and every picture, the child's ear is directed towards the father's mouth, so he is paying attention to what is said, to the best of his abilities.”

She noted that on William’s end the parenting style was always “consistent” but noted he was “affectionate,” and “ attentive”.

Inbaal explained: “[He’s] keeping his eyes on the youngster therefore keeping him safe. And he's an involved father, chatting the son's ear off!

"William may be chatting excitedly about the rugby or he may be steering his son right – his conversation is confident, animated and involved, with pointed fingers and raised eyebrows. Whatever the topic of conversation is, the younger prince is an integral part of it.”
