Woman who won lottery twice and lost fortune claims it left her ‘at rock bottom’

A woman who won the lottery twice in just six months has claimed she was left at “rock bottom” after blowing the fortune.

Evelyn Adams, from New Jersey, USA, had been spending £20 a week on lottery tickets since 1971 while working in a convenience store. Her efforts seemed to have paid off when she won the £3.1million on the lottery in 1985 and then incredibly went on to win a further £1.1million jackpot only four months later.

However, the lucky lottery winner found herself unwantedly thrust into the public eye as her cash and privacy eventually disappeared. “I was known,” said Evelyn, according to UniLad. “I couldn’t go anywhere without being recognised.”

Evelyn first used her unexpected cheques for good, clearing some bills and setting up a college fund for her daughter. She also treated herself to a new car, but some poor business choices combined with a severe gambling problem saw Evelyn lose her cash and end up destitute in a trailer home.

Evelyn opened up about her fall from grace: “Winning the lottery isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be. I won the American dream, but I lost it, too. It was a very hard fall. It’s called rock bottom.” Her family had mixed reactions to her incredible luck. "Most of my family was great, but a few of my relatives were angry because I had so much."

The prize money was paid to her in annual instalments of £178,000, but by 2012 the money had all but dried up after Evelyn had spent most of it by regularly gambling at Atlantic City casinos.

She continued: “Everybody wanted my money. Everybody had their hand out. I never learned one simple word in the English language, 'no'. I wish I had the chance to do it all over again. I'd be much smarter about it now. I didn't drop a million dollars, but it was a lot of money.”
